Hi everyone! I was recently asked back by Cheery Lynn Designs to do another month of guest work for them, so here is my first project this month using their gorgeous dies! I've been admiring the beautiful new steampunk designs Cheery Lynn came out with recently so I'd been itching to try a mixed media style journal cover using a few of the new die cuts. I was thinking to make a 'diary' style journal, something that would be handled more as opposed to an 'art journal', so I wanted to get a nice embossed look to the cover and not go too 3D with the embellishing. So using the Cheery Lynn steampunk die cuts seemed like the perfect solution to getting that subtle embossed design for my cover.
I thought I would record my process as I created the cover so that you all could watch the process, I always think a visual is sometimes a lot easier to follow than writing down the instructions, right? So grab yourself a cup of coffee (or tea) and take out a few minutes to watch the process :)
I hope you enjoyed my video tutorial! Here are a few close-up photos of the cover design as well as a photo of the back of the cover....

Awesome job! Can be very long view and admire!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! And you make it looks so easy and fun. I'm curious about how long it took you to do both covers, start to finish, after gathering your materials. (I realize you had times of inactivity during drying times.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your wonderful talent.
O Gabrielle another marvelous project! Love how you went for a steampunktheme! Hugs,

Love these die cuts where can we buy them? Awesome journal! :)
ReplyDeleteNiesamowity!!!!
ReplyDeleteLordy how cool is that? Now i'm on the search to get those dies. Thanks for another great inspiration.(:o)
ReplyDeleteWow, so gorgeous! You are really a star when it comes to mixed media!
ReplyDeleteOnly you can take Steampunk and turn it into Glamorous! Love what you did with the journal cover!!! Now off to watch your video. Have an awesome day!
ReplyDeleteHi Michelle, ...you asked about the real time for creating both covers? Well, I can tell you that my battery on my phone (which I use for taping my video's) will only last for about an hour and 20 minutes so I have to get my designs finished in under that time. But I did prepare, as you mentioned by having my die cuts ready and giving my covers a couple of coats of Gesso before I began. But I think it's safe to say it was completely done in under an hour and a half (dry time included) :)
ReplyDeleteHi Elly and Pam (Langeaheart), thanks for the sweet comments....you can find these dies at Cheery Lynn Designs....If you look in the post above you will see that I listed the dies that I used, if you click on them you'll be linked to the item at their website :)

I always adore your videos. It is so much fun to watch your creative process. You are really good at expressing this visually (in terms of placement of elements) on your projects. Also, it helps to see how much texture paste you use and how you apply it What an amazing journal. Love the Cheery Lynn steampunk dies. I would love to get my hands on those :)!! I am planning to do some steampunk projects in the near future. Wonderful video and journal ... thanks so much for continuing to inspire and inform my creativity. -- Mary Elizabeth

ReplyDeleteHi I loved your journal video. You are very creative & talented with a wonderfull artistic eye. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned in this video that you were using homemade mixed media and the recipe would be on the right side of the video on your blog. I don't see it so it's either not there or I'm just missing it and it's probably right in front of my eyes. Lol. Is it the same as modge podge? If not could you tell me where to find this recipe?
Thank you so much. I have subscribed to you and look forward to watching many of your videos!!! Thanks
Hi Momofdiego, Thanks so much for your kind words....the texture paste recipe is under 'My Tutorials' but to make it easier, here is the link http://gabriellepollacco.blogspot.ca/2013/06/a-tranquil-moment-with-new-websters.html

ReplyDeleteHi Gabrielle! One last question...did you seal the journal with anything to protect it?
ReplyDeleteKirsten, I just now saw this, sorry for the late reply. You can use a spray sealant...if you dont have any handy, I've used hairspray in a pinch! It works! xo
DeleteYour Steampunk Journal was recommended to me by YouTube. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have found you. Wanted to express my appreciation for your great video, your ideas, and sharing where you got the dies.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the kind feedback! Glad you found me! xo
DeleteLoving your pictures and the authentic and genuine way you have put your story across - you're an inspiration and I am following your journey - awesome work!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing, i really want to use your technique for me art project as i am doing a project to do with steampunk and this would be perfect for my cover. so beautiful and such an inspiration for me now!
ReplyDeleteHow do you keep the cardboard covers from warping? Yours look fairly flat and mine are curving. Also, can you list a source for the journals? I only could find small ones. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHi Susan....I got my journal from a local dollar store called Dollarama. This particular book was a writing journal that my daughter uses but I have also gotten the type for mixed media with the heavy papers in them from there as well for about $3.00 ...I dont know if they still have them as its been a while since I bought one, but they are a heavy strong cardboard and dont seem to warp.
